UPCOMING CONCERTS AND SPECIAL EVENTS... +++ THIS WEEKEND FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 10TH… CARBON LEAF Doors Open 7:00pm Mike Ingram 7:30pm Carbon Leaf 8:15-10:00pm (DJ Night 10:30pm) BUY TICKETS>>> www.ticketfusion.com/store/one/index.html?store_id=2153&cid=&page_type=sched ![]() NOTHING RHYMES WITH WOMAN finds the Virginia-based band firmly in touch with its roots… the Celtic tinge that cloaks “Pink” is reminiscent of Carbon Leaf’s passel of self-released discs. Throughout the set, however, the quintet affirms a commitment to moving forward, kicking out the jams a bit more aggressively on the sinewy walking blues “Another Man’s Woman” and interpolating the rich organ playing of longtime Dave Matthews Band keyboardist Butch Taylor on several tracks, including the arresting opener “Indecision.” www.carbonleaf.com +++ JUST ANNOUNCED! FRIDAY OCTOBER 22ND... BROTHER ALI Doors Open 7:00pm To Be Announced 7:30pm Brother Ali 8:30-10:00pm BUY TICKETS>>> www.ticketfusion.com/store/one/index.html?store_id=2153&cid=&page_type=sched ![]() Brother Ali's last album, the critically acclaimed, The Undisputed Truth, was a landmark in hip-hop, an album that carried weight equally with critics and fans alike, an album of bold statements and bolder beats, politically and socially aware without being preachy. On his new album for Rhymesayers Entertainment (Atmosphere, P.O.S. etc) Us, Ali has turned his gaze inward, and started examining the human condition from the outside in. A profound personal glimpse into a vulnerability seldom seen or heard in music, Us touches on the strengths and flaws of the human condition, exploring drug abuse, divorce, homophobia and many more topics that most people are scared to touch upon in their own lives, much less on an album for the world to hear. As with previous endeavors, the beats here are courtesy of Ant, whose production work seems to be getting more soulful and lush by the minute. The guest appearances only accentuate Brother Ali's strengths, with Chuck D, Freeway, Joell Ortiz and Stokley Williams of Mint Condition making strong appearances. www.brotherali.com +++ THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 16TH… SAM ADAMS Doors Open 7:00pm The Forties 7:45-8:30pm G Curtis 8:50-9:00pm Sam Adams 9:15-10:00pm (DJ Night 10:30pm) BUY TICKETS>>> www.ticketfusion.com/store/one/index.html?store_id=2153&cid=&page_type=sched ![]() Samuel Adams Wisner, otherwise known as Wiz or Sam Adams, is a 21-year-old rapper out of Boston, MA. His innovation of the Hip Hop and Electronica/Dance genres create a sound that is smart, catchy and surely remembered. With his innovative remix of Asher Roths I Hate College, as well as his new Pokerfaced Remix, Samuel Adams has caught the ear of many Hip Hop supporters in a short time. www.facebook.com/#!/samadamslive?v=info&ref=ts www.myspace.com/thefortiesmusic +++ SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 18TH… THE APPLESEED CAST Doors Open 7:00pm You And Yourn 7:45pm The Appleseed Cast 8:45pm (DJ Night 10:30pm) BUY TICKETS>>> www.ticketfusion.com/store/one/index.html?store_id=2153&cid=&page_type=sched ![]() SAGARMARTA is a world where the melodic vocals and knotty delayed guitars Appleseed Cast is known for are supported by (and can't exist without) the ambient noise, electronic beats, bells, percussion, and keyboards the band has grown to love. They've been pegged with various genre names over the years, most of which they've outgrown and outlived. At this point, they are best described as weavers: of sounds beautiful and horrible, always intriguing, and of stories in sometimes inscrutable but always evocative lyrics. Their songs draw you in immediately, but demand multiple listens, which is why they've inspired such a loving and long-lasting following. They've weathered many storms of fashion. Sagarmatha is mountain-climbing music, Appleseed Cast are mountain-climbers. Sagarmatha is epic in scope and sound, evoking the horror and beauty of nature, the sublime. A band bred by the ocean and born in Kansas is unafraid to stare into the void of sea or sky. This record fits somewhere between the intersection of Low and the Flaming Lips, Can and the Postal Service, or Fugazi and Sigur Ros. www.theappleseedcast.com +++ WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 22ND… BUILT TO SPILL ![]() Doors Open 8:00pm Common Loon 9:00pm Revolt Revolt 10:00pm Built To Spill 11:00pm BUY TICKETS>>> www.ticketfusion.com/store/one/index.html?store_id=2153&cid=&page_type=sched PYGMALION MUSIC FESTIVAL! ![]() Three and a half years in the making, the efforts of writing and recording THERE IS NO ENEMY led Built to Spill founder Doug Martsch to wonder whether this would be the last album he ever makes. As his wife, I watched him work, pouring hour after hour , day after day into writing. Song lyrics were labored over then thrown in the trash, guitar parts revised again (and again). A musician and artist like Doug edits far more than he keeps. For over twenty years, Doug Martsch has been writing and recording music. Built to Spill members Brett Nelson (bass), Scott Plouf (drums) Jim Roth (guitar), and Brett Netson (guitar) have all been musicians for two decades. That adds up to more than a century. Doug’s strong aesthetic combines with the band members’ mix of approaches to create an aural topography. Doug sets course and navigates. Each member of Built to Spill comes to the music with a different set of expectations and ideals. www.builttospill.com +++ THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 23RD… PLASTICIAN ![]() Doors 9:00pm DJ Belly 9:30pm Nameloc 10:30pm DJ Solo 11:30pm Plastician 12:30am BUY TICKETS>>> www.ticketfusion.com/store/one/index.html?store_id=2153&cid=&page_type=sched PYGMALION MUSIC FESTIVAL! ![]() Chris Reed (aka Plastician) is a grime/dubstep DJ and producer based in Thornton Heath, London. Big Sean, is the newest artist signed to G.O.O.D. Music/Island Def Jam at the young age of 20. Sean gained a strong relationship with 102.7FM, a local radio station in Detroit where he displayed his rhyming skills weekly and met Kanye West after a radio interview in 2005. After months of submitting songs and numerous meetings, Sean finally got the call from Kanye West himself saying that he wanted to sign him. Sean has two mixtapes under his belt starting with “Finally Famous–The Mixtape” [Nov. 2007] and “UKNOWBIGSEAN–Finally Famous Vol. 2” [Spring 2009]. His hit single “Getcha Some” took over the internet and created major buzz, quickly solidified him as a breakout star. Big Sean released his debut album entitled “Finally Famous” in Fall 2009 and it features hip-hop stars such as 10-time Grammy Award-winning artist Kanye West, Pharrell, The Dream, and many more. www.uknowbigsean.com +++ WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 27TH… LOS STRAITJACKETS Doors/Bar Open 7:00pm Big Sandy And His Fly-Rite Boys 7:30-9:00pm Los Straitjackets 9:30-11:00pm BUY TICKETS>>> www.ticketfusion.com/store/one/index.html?store_id=2153&cid=&page_type=sched ![]() When members of the Los Straitjackets say their new record, The Further Adventures of the Los Straitjackets, is "all over the place," they certainly mean it. From the raunchy romp of album opener "Cal Speed," the hand clap boogie of "Fortune Cookie," the woozy vibrato of "Catalina" and on through to the flirtatious whimsy of "Noctural Twist" - loosely inspired by the 1930s-era jazz standard "Harlem Nocturne" - the new record is a return to form for the band. After spending the last couple of years making records with Kaiser George (Twist Party) and Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos, rockabilly belter Big Sandy, and East L.A. legend Little Willie G. (Rock En Espanol Vol. 1) the band found itself missing doing what it does best - and that's making straight up instrumental rock and roll. "It's definitely heavier - more garage-y than our other records," says guitarist Danny Amis. "It's definitely a little more of a punk record than before." To write and record the new album - its first record of original instrumentals since 2003's Supersonic Guitars in 3-D - the band spent a lot of time listening to its heroes, including Link Wray, and the Ventures. In addition to those artists, guitarist Eddie Angel listened to other bands that may be less likely to be associated with the Los Straitjackets, including Led Zeppelin and The Cramps. He described the process of listening to records for inspiration adding, "Then we drank a lot of scotch, also for inspiration." "We never try to be meaningful," Angel says. "We're an anecdote to that. Our goal is to bring fun to the party." The 13 new tracks on The Further Adventures of the Los Straitjackets will definitely inject a lot of fun into any party. www.straitjackets.com +++ TUESDAY NOVEMBER 9TH… REVEREND HORTON HEAT Doors Open 7:00pm Split Lip Rayfield 8:00pm Legendary Shack Shakers 9:00pm Reverend Horton Heat 10:15pm BUY TICKETS>>> www.ticketfusion.com/store/one/index.html?store_id=2153&cid=&page_type=sched ![]() Recently, Reverend Horton Heat bandleader Jim Heath had something along the lines of what he calls an epiphany. He's a little tired of being taken so seriously-well, maybe not seriously, exactly, but you get the idea-and lately he's noticed that some of his funnier, country-tinged songs were his biggest crowd pleasers. Besides, being entertaining is what this is all about, right? So, ladies and gents, roll your smokes up in your sleeve and hold on to your cowboy hats, it's time to take a trip back to a time before slick, over-produced country became the norm-a time when outlaws wrote songs about being without a pot to piss in-or at least about psycho ex-boyfriends and deadbeat girlfriends that spend your paycheck faster than you can say Lone Star. Welcome to Laughin' and Cryin' with the Reverend Horton Heat a record full of country-heavy tunes about bad habits, well-meaning but clueless husbands, ever-expanding beer-guts and, well, Texas. It wouldn't be a Reverend Horton Heat record without a song or-in this case, two-about the Lone Star State. And, while Laughin' and Cryin' marks a detour from the hard-driving punkabilly of the Rev's last record, 2004's Revival, this time tending toward honk, there's still some shit-kickers ["Death Metal Guys"] to let you know that Heath and crew still mean business. www.reverendhortonheat.com |
