Friday June 27th... CAROLYN WONDERLAND

Doors Open 7:00pm
Carolyn Wonderland 8:00pm

PRESENTED BY WWHP 98.3FM THE WHIP!

Carolyn Wonderland has the goods. A triple threat with her diverse songwriting, soulful vocals, and guitar goddess status - all featured on over twenty CDs, six of which are her releases - she has a pedigree in this business that's hard to match. A bit of a renegade, she likes to incorporate elements of Blues, Country, Swing, Zydeco, Surf, Gospel, Soul, and some nights, maybe even a Cumbia into the musical mix. Recent years have seen her stretching out musically working some expert whistling and scat singing into her shows. In addition to her trusty guitar, "Patty," Carolyn has been regularly playing her trumpet, and even occasionally the accordion, mandolin, or keys...she is threatening to take up nose flute if someone doesn’t stop her...

Wonderland's songs have been featured on NBC's "Homicide," Fox's "Time of Your Life," & Houston NORML even made a video PSA set to Carolyn's "Annie's Scarlet Letter." She has toured with acts like Buddy Guy and Johnny Winter, sat-in with String Cheese Incident, Robert Earl Keen, and Los Lobos, and even sang the "National Anthem" at Sturgis Bike Week 2003 -- her 10th anniversary playing Sturgis -- before Robbie Kneivel's record-breaking jump over one hundred Harleys. Recently, she was a panelist at the University of Texas LBJ Library's "Instruments of Freedom" Forum with Kinky Friedman, Marcia Ball, Jerry Jeff Walker and others. She's been lucky enough to jam with mentors and friends like Bob Dylan, Eddy Shaver and Ray Benson. She's co-written songs with Cindy Cashdollar, Candye Kane, Sarah Brown and Guy Forsyth.

How lucky can one girl get? Well, with a lot of hard work, just this lucky. In her words, "I still get to play most every night, so the adventure continues. Every musical interlude is a new page, another chance to jump into the Ether." Originally from Houston, a city where she has won awards in The Houston Press for everything from Best Guitarist, Vocalist, Songwriter, Blues, to Release of the Year and Musician of the Year -- virtually sweeping the awards for 5 years from the time she was a teenager. Now residing in Austin, Ms. Wonderland says, "I moved to the land of free guitar lessons!"

Saturday June 28th... ARI HEST

Doors Open 7:00pm
Hathaways 7:30-8:00pm
Ryan Groff 8:15-8:45pm
Ari Hest 9:00-10:00pm

Ari Hest, both a throaty and beguiling singer and deft acoustic guitarist, is taking the power to the people and helping us get the hell out of Best Buy. His indie-rock experiment, called 52... offers a web-based music subscription, a brand new song every week for the rest of the year and, in the end, a chance to help compile the best efforts into a full-length album to be released next year.

So far the songs are enchanting, and the song-writing push has Hest working hard, with a handful of songs that are multi-dimensional and fully evolved. His use of background vocals and ambient percussion are perfect additions to his chameleon-esque story telling. The songs are explorers in their own right... with "The Weight" pulling in the heaviness of Americana and "In a Rush" coming through in a sexy mambo.

The New York artist is coming through Champaign this summer, armed with his six month's worth of stock and, no doubt, the seeds of songs soon to come. Even if you decide not to join up in his hi-fi, indie revolution, you can still catch him analog :)

"KISS may have had their Army, but Bang Camaro IS the Army" says MTV News.

"Bang Camaro is a hot new 20-member ensemble that has redefined 'metal'." (Rolling Stone)

"...perhaps the premier party act in America: a full-blown metal assault dedicated to transplanting the fun back into rock through a series of kegger-iffic live shows..." (MTV News)

"Boston's Bang Camaro is more than a metal band. It is its own metal universe... Fear not: Bang Camaro has come to save our sorry, rock-depleted souls, and it's taking no prisoners." (Boston Globe)

The boys mix strut, energy, and arena rock hooks with indie sensibilities, solid musicianship, and blazing solos. Bang Camaro's shows are becoming legendary, hence the invitations to Lollapalooza, The Virgin, Download, and Wakarusa Festivals. This past year they have performed at Madison Square Garden, and later on they'll be rockin' on cruise ships with everyone from Lynyrd Skynyrd to Vince Neil from Motley Crue. The proverbial storm of hype is getting louder as Bang Camaro continues their aggressive tour schedule from coast to coast, rocking the roofs off every venue they play. Come see why MTV, Blender Magazine, Spin, Rolling Stone, and Billboard have all picked Bang Camaro as one of the "Top Buzz Bands of the Year."

Saturday May 31st.... PAUL THORN

Doors/Bar Open 7:00pm
Paul Thorn 8:00-10:00pm
(DJ Tim Williams 10:30pm)

PRESENTED BY WWHP 98.3 THE WHIP

ADVANCE TICKETS AVAILABLE NOW AT...
Bacca Cigar Co., Dandelion Vintage Clothing, Exile on Main Street, Skin-n-Tins Drum Shop, Any Frequency Records (in Monticello), The Pawn Shop (in Rantoul), at Highdive (during normal business hours), and also ONLINE at www.ticketfusion.com/store/one/index.html?store_id=2153&cid=&page_type=sched

One would expect to hear great stories from a guy who boxed Roberto "Hands of Stone" Duran on national television, made chairs for a living, skydives for fun, had his first singing gig at age three, and who happens to be one of the South's finest songwriters. Paul Thorn doesn't disappoint. After paying his dues for 12 years, he drew an opening slot for Sting and has subsequently toured with other heavy-hitters including Mark Knopfler, Jeff Beck, John Hiatt, Richard Thompson, Robert Cray, Marianne Faithfull, and John Prine. By 2002, Thorn landed with Back Porch Records (John Hammond, Alejandro Escovedo, Frank Black) and released Mission Temple Fireworks Stand, a quirky collection of Southern-fried roots rock. The tunes on his latest recording, Are You With Me? are no different. Thorn's gift for narrative is stronger than ever on these 12 songs about love (both lost and found). Sure, you'll hear his signature witty lyrics and brilliant irony, but Thorn can (and does) tug at your heartstrings every now and again.

Thursday May 22nd... WOODBOX GANG

Doors Open 8:00pm
Corn Desert Ramblers 9:00pm
Woodbox Gang 10:00pm

From the village of Makanda in extreme southern Illinois, in a little hollow called Vulture Valley, comes a "caustic acoustic cacophony" known as the Woodbox Gang. They have skillfully combined the American roots music styles of bluegrass, delta blues, folk, and traditional country with the aggressive delivery of punk rock to create their own style of music to which they have given the name "Trashcan Americana".

The Woodbox Gang's influences are as diverse as the music which they perform. The group admires artists such as Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, and the Ramones for their enduring inventiveness and their courage to "do their own thing, regardless of what anyone else may or may not be doing." The band's multi-instrumentalist Alex Kirt says "We are influenced by everything we've heard, whether it's a symphony orchestra or a push rod knockin' in an old 350 engine. Just about anything that makes a sound can be used to enhance the mood of a tune."

This idea can be heard on any one of the group's 5 albums on which they've used traditional guitar, mandolin, lap steel, banjo, fiddle, and bass combined with didjeridoos, kazoos, sawblades, gutbuckets, crowbars, ashtrays, and rusty gasoline cans to add brilliant audio hues their musical palette.
