NOTHING RHYMES WITH WOMAN finds the Virginia-based band firmly in touch with its roots… the Celtic tinge that cloaks “Pink” is reminiscent of Carbon Leaf’s passel of self-released discs. Throughout the set, however, the quintet affirms a commitment to moving forward, kicking out the jams a bit more aggressively on the sinewy walking blues “Another Man’s Woman” and interpolating the rich organ playing of longtime Dave Matthews Band keyboardist Butch Taylor on several tracks, including the arresting opener “Indecision.”

SAGARMARTA is a world where the melodic vocals and knotty delayed guitars Appleseed Cast is known for are supported by (and can't exist without) the ambient noise, electronic beats, bells, percussion, and keyboards the band has grown to love. They've been pegged with various genre names over the years, most of which they've outgrown and outlived.

At this point, they are best described as weavers: of sounds beautiful and horrible, always intriguing, and of stories in sometimes inscrutable but always evocative lyrics. Their songs draw you in immediately, but demand multiple listens, which is why they've inspired such a loving and long-lasting following. They've weathered many storms of fashion. Sagarmatha is mountain-climbing music, Appleseed Cast are mountain-climbers.

Sagarmatha is epic in scope and sound, evoking the horror and beauty of nature, the sublime. A band bred by the ocean and born in Kansas is unafraid to stare into the void of sea or sky. This record fits somewhere between the intersection of Low and the Flaming Lips, Can and the Postal Service, or Fugazi and Sigur Ros.

PYGMALION MUSIC FESTIVAL!

Three and a half years in the making, the efforts of writing and recording THERE IS NO ENEMY led Built to Spill founder Doug Martsch to wonder whether this would be the last album he ever makes. As his wife, I watched him work, pouring hour after hour , day after day into writing. Song lyrics were labored over then thrown in the trash, guitar parts revised again (and again). A musician and artist like Doug edits far more than he keeps.

For over twenty years, Doug Martsch has been writing and recording music. Built to Spill members Brett Nelson (bass), Scott Plouf (drums) Jim Roth (guitar), and Brett Netson (guitar) have all been musicians for two decades. That adds up to more than a century. Doug’s strong aesthetic combines with the band members’ mix of approaches to create an aural topography. Doug sets course and navigates. Each member of Built to Spill comes to the music with a different set of expectations and ideals.

Sean Anderson, a.k.a. Big Sean, is the newest artist signed to G.O.O.D. Music/Island Def Jam at the young age of 20. Sean gained a strong relationship with 102.7FM, a local radio station in Detroit where he displayed his rhyming skills weekly and met Kanye West after a radio interview in 2005. After months of submitting songs and numerous meetings, Sean finally got the call from Kanye West himself saying that he wanted to sign him.

Sean has two mixtapes under his belt starting with “Finally Famous–The Mixtape” [Nov. 2007] and “UKNOWBIGSEAN–Finally Famous Vol. 2” [Spring 2009]. His hit single “Getcha Some” took over the internet and created major buzz, quickly solidified him as a breakout star. Big Sean released his debut album entitled “Finally Famous” in Fall 2009 and it features hip-hop stars such as 10-time Grammy Award-winning artist Kanye West, Pharrell, The Dream, and many more.

When members of the Los Straitjackets say their new record, The Further Adventures of the Los Straitjackets, is "all over the place," they certainly mean it. From the raunchy romp of album opener "Cal Speed," the hand clap boogie of "Fortune Cookie," the woozy vibrato of "Catalina" and on through to the flirtatious whimsy of "Noctural Twist" - loosely inspired by the 1930s-era jazz standard "Harlem Nocturne" - the new record is a return to form for the band. After spending the last couple of years making records with Kaiser George (Twist Party) and Cesar Rosas of Los Lobos, rockabilly belter Big Sandy, and East L.A. legend Little Willie G. (Rock En Espanol Vol. 1) the band found itself missing doing what it does best - and that's making straight up instrumental rock and roll.

"It's definitely heavier - more garage-y than our other records," says guitarist Danny Amis. "It's definitely a little more of a punk record than before." To write and record the new album - its first record of original instrumentals since 2003's Supersonic Guitars in 3-D - the band spent a lot of time listening to its heroes, including Link Wray, and the Ventures. In addition to those artists, guitarist Eddie Angel listened to other bands that may be less likely to be associated with the Los Straitjackets, including Led Zeppelin and The Cramps. He described the process of listening to records for inspiration adding, "Then we drank a lot of scotch, also for inspiration." "We never try to be meaningful," Angel says. "We're an anecdote to that. Our goal is to bring fun to the party." The 13 new tracks on The Further Adventures of the Los Straitjackets will definitely inject a lot of fun into any party.

Recently, Reverend Horton Heat bandleader Jim Heath had something along the lines of what he calls an epiphany. He's a little tired of being taken so seriously-well, maybe not seriously, exactly, but you get the idea-and lately he's noticed that some of his funnier, country-tinged songs were his biggest crowd pleasers. Besides, being entertaining is what this is all about, right?

So, ladies and gents, roll your smokes up in your sleeve and hold on to your cowboy hats, it's time to take a trip back to a time before slick, over-produced country became the norm-a time when outlaws wrote songs about being without a pot to piss in-or at least about psycho ex-boyfriends and deadbeat girlfriends that spend your paycheck faster than you can say Lone Star.

Welcome to Laughin' and Cryin' with the Reverend Horton Heat a record full of country-heavy tunes about bad habits, well-meaning but clueless husbands, ever-expanding beer-guts and, well, Texas. It wouldn't be a Reverend Horton Heat record without a song or-in this case, two-about the Lone Star State. And, while Laughin' and Cryin' marks a detour from the hard-driving punkabilly of the Rev's last record, 2004's Revival, this time tending toward honk, there's still some shit-kickers ["Death Metal Guys"] to let you know that Heath and crew still mean business.

Tractor Kings are the reverb-drenched country rockers led by Jacob Fleischli, who evokes both Lou Reed and Bob Dylan in myriad ways. The Kilborn Alley Blues Band plays filthy Chicago blues, with just a little bit of southern fried soul. KABB is not about youth angst; it is about adult delirium.

If you haven’t heard much about The Constellations, you will soon. This eight-piece rock band hails from Atlanta, Georgia and were named one of SPIN Magazine’s “Must Hear Bands at SXSW” and PASTE’s “Best of What’s Next.” Having recently performed at SXSW and Bonnaroo, as well as performing at Lollapalooza (the night before they hit Highdive!), this band is getting excellent exposure in North America.

Their debut album, Southern Gothic, (re-released in June with major label support from Virgin Records) sounds like a “psychedelic/soul-rock explosion”. The band’s vocalist and frontman, Elijah Jones, leads listeners through the spectacle that takes places during Atlanta’s after-hours from 2AM-noon. Southern Gothic features guest vocals from Asher Roth on “We’re Here to Save the Day” and Cee-Lo on “Love is a Murder.”

To write and record the new album - its first record of original instrumentals since 2003's Supersonic Guitars in 3-D - the band spent a lot of time listening to its heroes, including Link Wray, and the Ventures.

The Constellations could have called their debut album After Hours. Sure, Martin Scorsese already used that name for his 1985 black comedy, but the two works share much in common. Both are wide screen spectacles rife with seedy scenes and eccentric personalities, propelled by a manic energy that hustles the audience deeper into the unexpected. But Southern Gothic was a better choice. Because The Constellations stomping ground is Atlanta, GA, and in the wee small hours of the morning, A-Town can get awfully bizarre.

The record is all about what happens in Atlanta from 2 AM until noon. Your tour guide on this madcap adventure is the magnetic frontman and vocalist Elijah Jones, the ringleader of the twisted circus that is The Constellations, who spent two years writing and recording the album with producer Ben H. Allen (Animal Collective, Gnarls Barkley), along with some storied cronies from the local scene. Not that they set out with specific intentions. Far from it. “All of us wanted to do a record about Atlanta, but we never said it in words,” recalls Jones. “But the deeper we got into it, the more we realized we were writing a concept album.”

"It's definitely a little more of a punk record than before." The son of acclaimed author Larry McMurtry (Lonesome Dove, Terms of Endearment), James grew up on a steady diet of Johnny Cash and Roy Acuff records. His first album, released in 1989, was produced by John Mellencamp and marked the beginning of a series of acclaimed projects for Columbia and Sugar Hill. In 2004, McMurtry released the universally lauded Live in Aught-Three on Compadre Records. 2005's Childish Things garnered some of the highest critical praise of McMurtry's career and spent six weeks at No. 1 on the Americana Music Radio Chart in 2005 and 2006. In September 2006, Childish Things and "We Can't Make It Here" won the Americana Music Awards for album and song of the year, respectively.

McMurtry received more Americana Music Award nominations for 2008's Just Us Kids. The album marked his highest Billboard 200 chart position in more than 19 years. The Washington Post noted McMurtry's live prowess: "Much attention is paid to James McMurtry's lyrics, and rightfully so: He creates a novel's worth of emotion and experience in four minutes of blisteringly stark couplets. What gets overlooked, however, is that he's an accomplished rock guitar player. At a sold-out Birchmere, the Austin-based artist was joined by drummer Daren Hess and bassist Ronnie Johnson in a set that demonstrated the raw power of wince-inducing imagery propelled by electric guitar. It was serious stuff, imparted by a singularly serious band."
